12 Bradway Mill

River Sheaf

Map of Abbeydale

The River Sheaf in Abbeydale

This mill was used for grinding corn when it was granted to Beauchief Abbey in about 1300. The mill was converted into a scythe grinding mill in 1785. In 1880, the site was affected by the straightening of the Midland Railway line which needed the removal of the mill buidings.
By 1884 the dam was used as a fishpond and by 1900 it had become a boating lake. No remains of the mill survive but part of the head-goit can be seen as a hollow in the woodland to the east of where Totley Brook and Old Hay Brook join.

The rest of the site has been developed into a housing estate.
