11 Walk Mill

River Sheaf

Map of Abbeydale

The River Sheaf in Abbeydale

This mill, first recorded in 1280, was used as a fulling mill up to the year 1537. It was then also used for cutlery making. By 1746, it was being used for grinding knife blades. It was used for paper making for a short time around 1828 and also for a wide range of other processes around 1850.
Nothing now remains of the mill. The site has been levelled and is now occupied by a railway line and Dore and Totley Station which was opened in 1872. The station is still used by local commuter trains running between Sheffield and Manchester through the Hope Valley.

The station buildings have been used as offices and stores for several businesses. The latest occupiers of the building have converted it into a restaurant.
